6. Safe driving

Passing the category W driving test is just the first step in becoming a truly safe and competent work vehicle or tractor driver.

Getting a full driving licence allows you to drive on all public roads, except motorways, in the category of vehicle for which you hold a full licence.

If you passed your driving test in a vehicle with an automatic transmission then your licence only covers you to drive automatics in that category.

There are also some special conditions that apply to novice drivers during the first two years:

• you must display N-plates in red against a white background, on the front and back of a yellow fluorescent tabard worn over your outer clothing
• novice motorcyclists detected with a blood alcohol concentration between 20mg and 80mg can face disqualification for three months and a fine of €200
• a lower threshold of seven penalty points leading to disqualification usually applies to novice drivers.

Safe driving now that you're qualified

Now you're a fully-qualified and licensed work vehicle and tractor driver. But you should never stop learning more driving skills and road safety awareness. Remember, now that you're a driver, you're even more responsible for your safety and the safety of others

Can a novice work vehicle and tractor driver drive on the motorway?

No. As a work vehicle and tractor driver you cannot drive on a motorway under any circumstances.
